Dr. Aaron Prado, a distinguished figure in the San Antonio music scene, composed a special piece for Round III. His work, “El Colibrí y la Cempasúchil” (The Hummingbird and the Marigold), draws inspiration from an Aztec legend, beautifully blending Mexican and Hispanic cultural themes. This composition is  part of the Third Round , featuring elements like the traditional leona bass. Read more about Prado’s piece here.

Finalists will add their personal flair to this piece, crafting original cadenzas that reflect their interpretations of the legend, showcasing their creativity and virtuosity. This initiative, generously underwritten by Pauline and Randolf Glickman, not only showcases individual talent but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage, making The Gurwitz 2024 a fusion of competition and cultural storytelling.
